Mission & Objective:

It is a “not for profit” company with a mission “To Serve to Worship”. The main aim and objective of the institution is to provide affordable and subsidized treatment to the patients in the field of in Neurology, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Neurology, Neuro-Psychiatry, Neuro-Radiology, Neuro-Intervention and Neuro-Rehabilitation.

About The Institute:

Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata – is the brainchild of the eminent Neurosurgeon – Dr R P Sengupta – who is reputed as the “Neurosurgeon of the Millennium”. An eminent neurosurgeon practicing in the UK for the past 48 years, he was devastated at the lack of treatment facilities for patients suffering from neurological disorders, in his own home town- Kolkata. Whereas Kolkata did not lack in skilled doctors – it lacked in the existence of a platform where their skills could be put to use. Government Hospitals had the necessary skill-set but not a specialized clinical-care service for neurological diseases and was bogged down by sheer patient population resulting in poor care & facilities. Private institutions set-up exclusively to attend to neurological diseases - were situated in other parts of the country & the multispecialty institutions based in Kolkata - could be afforded by only a handful few. Further Eastern India – did not have any exclusive facility for treating neurological diseases. Death resulting from head- injuries/Brain Haemorrhage is often due to delayed treatment or secondary complications and there is an urgent need to treat the patient within the “golden hour”. The need of the hour, therefore was to have a world-class clinical-care facility exclusively devoted to offering clinical-care in neurological diseases and that too with a “not-for-profit” mission. The total commitment to this mission resulted in the formation of the “Institute of Neurosciences, Kolkata” in 2005.
