Urodynamic studies

Urodynamic studies (UDS) is a set of diagnostic studies of the lower urinary tract that analyses how the bladder, urethra and sphincters function, capacity to store urine, ability to void and quality of the urine flow.

The components of Urodynamic studies are

  • Cystometry
  • Electromyography
  • Pressure flow metry (Voiding pressure study)
  • Uroflowmetry

A doctor suggests Urodynamics study if a patient presents with the following symptoms:

  • History of a known cause of Neurogenic bladder
  • Urinary leaks
  • Sensation of incomplete evacuation
  • Loss of sensation of urination
  • Increased frequency of urination
  • Urgency of urination
  • Inability to urinate
  • Poor urine flow
  • Intermittent urinary flow

Some of the clinical conditions that may need Urodynamic study

  • Spinal cord injury
  • Myelopathy
  • Parkinsonism
  • Enlarged prostrate
  • To differentiate an organic cause from a functional one

Procedure:

Prior to the study, the doctor does some preliminary investigations. Patient is usually advised a laxative the night before. The study is done under an antibiotic prophylaxis. The UDS is a day care procedure. It is simple, pain free, safe and informative. The study is done at Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata by the Rehabilitation medicine consultants and is assisted by the nursing staff.  Post procedure patient is advised regarding bladder management with or without the need for medication.
